If you are reading this you are either actively starting your own business or contemplating starting one. Whether you are selling head lice products, offering in home music lessons, or opening a new school, there is palpable excitement and elation about starting your business journey. To get beyond the nervous anticipation, string of successes and inevitable obstacles that follow, it is important to trust the process. While every entrepreneur has their own approach to finding success, here are some tips and recommendations to help you make the most of your journey.
Love What You Do
Business ownership draws on creative thinking, it usurps time and it challenges you to learn new things “with the quickness.” In the last two years, I have learned how to file a corporate entity, write daily blog posts, manage the back end of two websites, and improve social media account traffic. I did not start my business with the goal of mastering these skills, but the are all necessary to make it grow.
As a business owner, you are going to have to do things you don’t love to nurture what you do love. You may even have to take on tasks you actually hate. But, if you begin with a foundation of LOVE, these are sacrifices you will be more willing to make in order to succeed! You must “find the torture that you enjoy”, or else, when it gets hard, you will quit.
Draw on the Experiences of Others
You will be challenged on a daily basis after a business launch. Your physical and emotional reserves will be tapped. You will have a million plus items on your never ending to do list. Take my advice and draw on the experiences of others (daily) by creating a support team…You’re not alone!
Whether you do this through reading business books, business focused networking groups or entrepreneur podcasts (I like So Money, Onward Nation and EO Fire), learn how successful entrepreneurs reached their full potential. Then incorporate their systems or tips, and avoid their failures or oversights. This is crucial. It saves you time, energy and helps you maintain your momentum.
Set Measurable Goals and Crush Them
Goal setting can feel overwhelming with so many priorities swimming around and shiny objects to focus on. There are so many competing priorities requiring your attention, the main one being “I just need to make it to launch”. The goal setting generally ends there, but launch is just the beginning! It is so important reflect on your progress and mistakes weekly, while keeping the bigger picture in mind. An accountability partner or a business group may be a good way to do this effectively.
All of your goals should be clear and S.M.A.R.T. They should all have a section about potential action steps and a timeline for completion. Work backwards from the point of completion, and figure out what is needed on a daily, weekly or monthly basis in order to crush your target.
It is difficult at the beginning because it’s not quite clear what the focus of the goals should be, but using a tool such as a purpose planner may be helpful in getting started.
In the end, the tools and resources are endless. You have everything you need to get started at your fingertips. Be intentional, have a clear concept, create your goals, and take it one step at a time.
